In order to preserve precious materials and documents concerning the city's culture and everyday customs which have been passed down from generation to generations,Suginami City built an historical museum in May 1989. The desplayed items help you tounderstand the local history and culture of Suginami, and also ponder its future. The permanent exhibit on the first floor of the main building is an introduction to the history of Suginami, staring from primitive and ancient times, through the medieval period and pre-modern times to Suginami today. In the special exhibit room, special exhibits are held three times a year, based on particular themes, and sometimes there are lectures to suit the exhibit. When special exhibits are not held a semi-permanent exhibit,"Suginami Literary Hall",is held. In addition, there is an information corner on the second floor of the main building, where visitors can view videos related to history and culture. There is also an ancient farmhouse of the Edo area That was relocated to the museum property,as well as an ancient gate which serves as an entrance to the musem. On Saturdays,Sundays and national holidays, there is fire burnig in the Japajnese-style hearth in the afternoon.
